Why Sleep’s Optional and People Aren’t | Tristan Bailey
For episode 208, we sat down with Tristan Bailey. From building a national electrical and security company to launching a SaaS business on the side, Tristan’s approach to leadership is fast, people first, and unapologetically hands on. In this episode we talk about sales psychology, long-term relationships, retention strategies, and how to grow a team that actually sticks. Plus some wisdom on low voltage tech, cold beers, and why sleep might be optional.
Tristan Bailey shares insights from building a national electrical and security company over 20 years. Starting with just two people, Tristan and his business partner Darren have grown Vision Systems into a successful commercial operation working across New Zealand.
Tristan's leadership philosophy centres on people-first relationships. He emphasises the importance of identifying the right people in sales situations—decision makers, influencers, and "time wasters"—and maintaining genuine long-term partnerships with clients. His approach includes surprising clients with unexpected value, like crediting customers when jobs come in under budget.
For staff retention, Tristan implements unique incentives including substantial long-service bonuses (£10,000 at five years, £20,000 at ten years). He focuses heavily on thorough onboarding processes, regular check-ins with staff, and creating a strong company culture. This has resulted in remarkably low staff turnover.
Alongside Vision Systems, Tristan has developed Scan One, a SaaS business providing biometric scanning solutions now used by 70,000 people monthly and expanding to America.
Tristan believes businesses should operate with speed and accuracy, particularly in communication. He functions on minimal sleep (3-4 hours nightly) and maintains work-life balance through regular exercise. His future aspirations include continued business growth and creating unexpected opportunities for others.
